PUBLIC DOMAIN
THE TOPIC CONTINUES
As you may remember from our last meeting, the topic was public domain
and how it relates to knowledge, art, and music. Guitarists often listen to
other modern guitarists for inspiration and ideas. However, there is a nearly
forgotten instrument called the lute that has hours and hours of public
domain music available, and much of this material has ideas that go well
played on the guitar, specifically rock and metal guitar. Many musicians
today rely on down tuning and especially drone strings and that’s exactly
what lute players did back in the day. Although the ideas are seeds that
need to be sprouted into something that sounds a little more modern, the
basic ideas are free for the taking. Modern remake recordings of the great
lute pieces are under copyright, but the manuscripts and musical ideas are
not. My favorite lutist in the public domain is John Dowland (1563-1626),
but there are many to choose from out there. And even Bach wrote for the
lute. For a good rendition of the musical ideas available seek-out,
download, and listen to the video called Dowland - Complete Lute
Galliards Works Lachrimae - Presentation -Century-s record. Paul O-
Dette. Paul O’Dette plays the lute for this memorable Dowland collection
and it is brimming over with musical ideas for the modern guitarist. Paul
O’Dette is very good at what he does and there are several videos available
of his artistic abilities. Another video that’s pretty cool is called j-s-bach-
complete-lute-music. Or another video of music penned by J.S. Bach
(1685-1750) you may also like is called J. S. Bach - Sonatas - Partitas For
Lute. Robert Barto plays pieces by Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) and
this video is called Silvius Leopold Weiss Lute Sonatas- Robert Barto.
There are many lute videos available – William Byrd (1540-1623) is also
exceptional – I’ve only listed the musicians I like. I stole some ideas from
my favorites and threw them together for your listening pleasure. I suspect
the average listener probably couldn’t tell where the ideas came from…
For the first MP3 example below I borrowed heavily from a tune by John
Dowland called Fine Knacks for Ladies and changed the key and the feel
and then added some bass and drums and sound effects for some ideas on
what is possible to be done. I tried to use drone notes and flourish accents
similar to what he does on the lute but I changed them for a rock feel. By
the way, the guitar amp (Poulin 456) and cabinet (Djammincabs), bass
amp (Bass Grinder), Hammond B3 organ (Colla B3), synth (Surge), limiter
(Mundt), and reverb (Oril River, Dragonfly, and Zystrix BONUS Reverbs)
were all free effects. The weird sounds (Zystrix Free Audio Samples) and
bass and snare drum sounds (Zystrix Drums) were also free. For the
second MP3 example I borrowed ideas from a piece by a French and
Jewish composer named Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) who penned
a difficult-to-find Concerto, Op. 39 -- then I tried to make the ideas seem a
little more modern. On the third example I borrowed heavily from the J.S.
Bach piece called Suite for Lute, once again changing the key and the feel,
and then playing them on the organ. For the short fourth and final bonus
example I borrowed heavily from Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and his piece
called Suisse Orange (Storm). On all of these examples I also tried to
stay within the feel of the Halloween holiday coming soon. Download or

CONCLUSION
Music found in the public domain has so many ideas to offer as to be
overwhelming and stupefying. I spent a couple hours combining ideas and
came up with this offering. Change the key, change the feel, change the
tempo, change the rhythm, change your mind. And then their ideas become
yours. Mix them, match them, collect the whole set. It’s all fair game in the
world of public domain.
I guess that’s it...
The person who overlooks public domain has no advantage over the person
who refuses it. And those ancient artists were navigating the same
obstacles present now.
