Happy
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is on November 24th, 2022 this year. Thanksgiving in the
USA was originally observed at many different times of the year in many
different regions both as a religious but also as a secular celebration.
Many of the early religious immigrants who came to America used the
holiday as a way to invent a story
that whitewashed, concealed,
and covered up a horrifying
atrocity on the indigenous
people. That aside, it officially
became a national holiday in
America in 1863 as decreed by
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th
president, to be held on the
fourth Thursday of November.
Since then the holiday has slowly
become more of an eating fest
and less of a day of being
grateful and giving thanks for our
station in life. Sometimes we overlook what we have and who we are and
instead feel regret about what we don’t have and who we’re not. And our
conditions can change from the sublime to a permanent life-changing
disaster in the twinkle of an eye. So what are you thankful for?
Considering my age (67) I feel I’ve had a pretty good and very lucky run.
Sometimes I can’t believe I made it this far. I never answered death’s
knock at the door and I dodged the Abyss of Forever many times. My
health is still holding out although sometimes I wonder for how long. I am
still able to keep and support a free (no advertising) website running with
what I feel is genuine help for others. I’m not proud of everything I ever
did, or said, or believed. I’ve been to my share of funerals for those I
cared for, but I still have some old friends and past lovers who were very
forgiving over the years. And I feel a person should strive as much as
possible to live a life without regrets: to be less judgmental, less self-
centered, more tolerant, more compassionate, more altruistic, and to
improve every year. Living life and gaining wisdom is a process that
eventually comes to an end. Don’t wait to be chopped down to your knees
and appreciate who you are and what you have now. There will come a
time you won’t be able to do that. So be truthful, what are you thankful
for?
Dangerous Neighbors
It was the fall of 1988 and Dangerous Neighbors performed at a packed-
house bar in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The band that was working there
that night asked us to play a few tunes on their equipment. As you may
know, playing on some else's gear is like wearing someone else's
underpants. But that’s OK, a good time was had by all. This is our last
tune of a 15-minute set and it’s a cover of Closer to Home by Grand Funk
Railroad. This recording was made with a small consumer grade cassette
recorder connected to the front-of-house mixing board output, and that
copy was copied to another cassette, and that was copied to here in MP3
format. So this nearly 35 year old cassette produced true audio fidelity in
the lowest sense of the word. Enjoy.

Maybe I’ll see you next time.
Have a warm, cozy, and safe Thanksgiving.
