What Happened
in 2022?
A Quick Overview.
A lot of things can happen in a year and 2022 is no
different, but some things simply resist change. The
USA still has ongoing issues with gun violence, health
care and affordability, illegal immigration and the
border, education and student debt, the environment and climate change,
government spending, obesity, inequality, racism, sexism, political
dysfunction, drug addiction, and infrastructure. However, here’s a short
review of the past year 2022.
Although the price of gasoline has come down
dramatically, inflation has had a lasting impact worldwide
and many central banks have raised their rates to record
levels in an effort to place controls. The Covid-19
pandemic restrictions have mostly lifted making
international borders more open. Russia invaded Ukraine,
the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II,
and this has caused over 15 million Ukrainians to be
displaced. This in addition to nuclear threats, international
condemnations and sanctions, and the withdrawal of
hundreds of companies from Russia. Russia ain’t looking
so good on the world stage right now. Following a major counteroffensive
by Ukraine in the east of the country, Putin announced a partial
mobilization of Russia and threatens nuclear retaliation, saying "this is not
a bluff".
The world population topped over 8 billion
people and sometimes I wonder how far
that number can go before we start to fall off
the edge of the earth.
The ongoing threat of malware,
ransomware and other cyber-attacks
against businesses, government agencies
and IT companies is still a big concern while
the five most dangerous cyber-security
attack techniques include using cloud
services as attack platforms, attacks
involving stalker-ware against mobile
devices, attacks against multi-factor authentication, and system backup
and communications satellites. Cyber-criminal organizations have
become so proficient they have begun selling malware kits to amateur
hackers for less than $10. Cell phones have increasingly become a target
for difficult-to-detect government spyware.
Women’s rights are constantly being eroded all over the world and the
USA is no exception. The Supreme Court overturned Roe V Wade and
the abortion law decision was left to the individual states with at least 13
states (so far) banning it entirely giving a zygote more rights than an adult
human being.
The biggest breakthrough in fusion energy since 1997 was reported at the
Joint European Torus in Oxford, the UK, with 59 mega-joules produced
over five seconds (11 megawatts of power), which is more than double the
previous record.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the
second part of its Sixth Assessment Report on climate change and
concluded that many environmental impacts on our
planet are on the verge of becoming "irreversible".
The first known dinosaur fossil linked to the very day
of the Chicxulub asteroid impact (about 65 million
years ago) was reported by paleontologists.
The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 now
exceeds over 500 million worldwide.
A European Southern Observatory team announced the discovery of
micro-nova, a new type of exploding star.
The Event Horizon Telescope collaboration reveals its first image of
Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way.
NASA's DART crashes into the asteroid Dimorphos in a first test of
potential planetary defense.
NASA launches Artemis 1, the first no-crew (manikins) launch of its Space
Launch System, the most powerful rocket ever launched into orbit. The
onboard Orion capsule orbited the Moon before returning to Earth as a
demonstration of planned human missions.
After substantial protests against China's Zero-COVID policies, the
Chinese government eased on its restrictions. Covid-19 cases and related
mortalities have spiked all over China creating a “Covid explosion”.
Many great actors, artists, musicians, and prominent people died in 2022:
Mikhail Gorbachev, Queen Elizabeth II, Sidney Poitier, Angela Lansbury,
Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), David McCullough, Kirstie Alley (Cheers),
Olivia Newton-John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Loretta Lynn, Coolio, Naomi Judd,
Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Anne Heche, Gilbert Gottfried,
Louis Anderson, Sally Kellerman, Meat Loaf, and Christine McVie among
many many others.
LOCAL NEWS
The Zystrix website got a serious face-lift in January which continues on to
today. Maybe you remember the old website, I’d post it but it’s too
embarrasing.
And what happened at Zystrix in 2022? Thank goodness it’s more of the
same. Zystrix is free, both in the content it provides and the attitude it
represents. It contains no paywall and never did. It never shows Google
driven ads following you around desperately trying to make a sale.
Advertising is never allowed here. We never collect financial kick-backs.
We value people over advertising dependence, and privacy over stealthy
personal prying by companies using your personality as a weapon against
you to get your money. We never allow that. Your download activities are
never tallied and recorded. They never were. These principles keep
Zystrix more honest about the various musical topics presented because
there is no pressure to earn money. We are very proud of this tradition
and it will continue into the new year. Your loyalty is deeply appreciated.
2022 has been a wonderful and productive year and it is my sincere hope
it will continue into 2023. Thanks so much to those of you who make it all
worthwhile. So to close out the year with a final thought for 2022…

Not long ago I was searching for some free audio loops for recording and
noticed a number of people are charging a lot of money for not many loops.
I can’t honestly vouch for their quality but I can vouch for the fact of their
being over-priced. Why would anyone pay eighteen American dollars for 50
loops or less? That’s just crazy.
Below you will find over 200 free bass loops to choose from for your next
project. They are in the key of C, they are recorded at 90 beats per minute,
they are royalty free, and several examples are included below in MP3
format so you can get an idea of what they sound like. Most of the loops
are two bars long in common time (4/4) although some are longer. The
complete collection of over 200 bass loops is available in a compressed file
of 24-bit Wav format for those who seek out higher recorded quality. The

Synthesizer Patches and Presets
I’m a sucker for synth patches that are strange or never heard rarities. The
effects (FX) synth presets are always my first go-to favorites on any
synthesizer quickly followed by the organs and pads. So here’a a bunch of
free synth patches for the Synapse Audio Dune 2 and Dune 3
synthesizers. There are a few basses and organs, there’s also a number of
pads, but most of them are sound effects. Is there any such thing as a
sound effect pad? Hmm, well, maybe. Anyway, to install them simply
inflate (unzip) the folders, find the Dune 3 or Dune 2 documents directory
folder on your hard drive where your factory presets are located, and then
copy the folders there. They will show up under your Dune Soundbanks
tab. If not then you may have to exit and re-start the synth program. Each
folder contains 48 presets or patches with a bonus folder of extras. There
are links below to hear some recorded examples. All were produced by
pressing keyboard note C4 or thereabouts. These sounds and associated
patches are royalty free and yours to keep and use. Enjoy.
