Happy New Year 2024
Well, here we are; it’s almost the end of the
year and this is the last Zystrix issue for
2023. The old holiday wrappings are now in
the trash and we’re looking for the
promise of a fresh start. So let’s
reminisce over the major news
happenings and the important
people we lost. Then we’ll talk about the
local happenings. And at the end of all this
there’s another free Dangerous Neighbors
neo-classical piano solo MP3 download for
your New Year celebration enjoyment. So
sit back and relax. Welcome to Zystrix, the
heartbeat of the universe. Where creativity
and free-thinking have more value than
conformity.
2023 NEWS
This list isn’t all inclusive, it’s just
the highlights. And there’s been
some horrible holiday diseases
going around lately as witnessed
here at the home front. I wasn’t
able to mail out the holiday card
posted last issue because I was
too weak. Sorry, but you’ll have to
settle for the download. But better living through pharmacology,
so life is looking up. Let’s talk about 2023.
The world is at war in more places than we’ve seen in a century.
And culture wars continue to rage, dragging in the world’s largest
and most recognizable companies. The US faces a rising threat
of widespread civil unrest. Many Americans think that a civil war
is likely within the next ten years.
The planet is still heating up. The World Meteorological
Organization released data
indicating that June-August 2023
was the hottest three-month
period in recorded history across
the Earth. July 2023 was the
hottest month on record, with
August being recorded as the
second-hottest month ever.
Global temperatures still remain
well above normal for this time of
year, as 2023 will likely end as
the hottest ever recorded. As global warming accelerates, more
areas are becoming uninhabitable, leading to economic instability,
cultural fragmentation, and political strife.
The emergence of ChatGPT gave AI a prominence not seen
before. Quantum computers have taken a big step towards
commercialization and they’re coming for white-collar jobs. The
speed of improvement in AI over just the past year has been
startling to some and worrisome for many.
Scientists achieved breakthroughs in harnessing the weird effects
of particles at a quantum level to enable record-breaking
computational speed and power. The technology could render
the encryption behind passwords obsolete, making emails,
personal health data, or financial transactions insecure. Digital
privacy (even at this Zystrix website) could become a thing of the
past.
Professor Louis Brus, was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for
his work on the “discovery and development of quantum dots,
nanoparticles so tiny that their size determines their properties.”
A vast, water-filled “cathedral” roughly 500 meters beneath the
Kamb Ice Stream, a glacier in West Antarctica, bustles with
marine organisms. The cavern provides a window into the
continent’s warmer ancient past.
Social scientists now increasingly recognize that loneliness
results not just from isolation from people, but also from animals,
places, routines, rituals and more.
That view may lead to new ways to
manage the feeling, which is
becoming a public health concern in
the United States.
Fungi that cause serious lung
infections are now found throughout
the U.S. Histoplasma, Coccidioides
and Blastomyces fungi have become
more widespread in the United States. The fungi, which cause
serious lung infections, were once thought to be confined to
certain regions of the country.
The CDC issued a warning that an antimicrobial-resistant fungus
is an “urgent threat.” Cases of the rare fungus, Candida Auris,
rose rapidly this year. The microbe spreads easily in healthcare
settings and doesn’t respond to conventional treatments.
Meanwhile, the world is facing an antibiotics pipeline crisis,
leaving us out of options to treat common infections. Growing
antimicrobial resistance threatens the gains of modern medicine,
making routine medical procedures dangerous and potentially
returning us to a time when everyday infections could be lethal.
A fresh look at the frozen mummy, Ötzi, the Iceman’s ancestors
may have been Neolithic farmers, a new genetic analysis
indicates. Ötzi also had male-pattern baldness and darker skin
than previously thought.
Coal-fired power plants across the United States are shutting
down as society shifts toward clean energy sources. A smooth
transition to renewables could depend in large part on grid-
forming inverters, devices that hook up solar and wind farms to
the existing power grid and stabilize the system.
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away at the
age of 96. Her son, Prince Charles, ascended to the throne as
King Charles III. He technically became king in 2022 but was not
crowned officially until May 6, 2023, to give him and the family a
chance to mourn the queen's passing and organize a proper
coronation ceremony.
The first gene-editing technology has been approved for treating
life-threatening diseases. New therapeutics using CRISPR have
successfully alleviated symptoms in patients with sickle cell
disease. Ethical considerations and cost issues remain, but gene
editing could revolutionize medicine by eliminating inherited
diseases, enabling personalized therapeutics, and even
unlocking superhuman abilities.
Earth’s inner core may be reversing its rotation and may have
temporarily stopped spinning relative to the mantle and crust in
2009. Now, the inner core may be reversing its spin as part of a
cycle that happens every few decades.
Astronomers have seen shock waves shaking the web of the
universe for the first time. Shock waves ripple along the
magnetic fields that permeate the cosmic web — the tangle of
galaxies, gas and dark matter that fills the universe. Studying
these shock waves, which were revealed by hundreds of
thousands of radio satellite images, could help astronomers
better understand those mysterious magnetic fields.
Now popular weight-management drugs are being counterfeited.
And many people are overdosing with the real ones because of
injection and dose confusion. Retailers and banks are warning
that the use of drugs like Ozempic will bring down demand for
junk food, medical devices, and maybe even furniture, beer, and
tobacco. These new drugs have the potential to eradicate
obesity but also change consumer
behaviors in unpredictable ways.
The National Ignition Facility (NIF)
has repeated a nuclear fusion
reaction resulting in a net positive
energy yield. Although the NIF isn’t
on a direct path to commercial
fusion power production, this
progress is one of the biggest achievements in decades to make
fusion available for mass production. Fusion, the source of the
Sun’s energy, could offer a nearly infinite source of clean energy.
In late June, the Supreme Court rejected affirmative action,
finding admissions programs at Harvard and other universities
unlawful. The decision reverberated across higher education
institutions of all stripes.
Affirmative action in college
admissions allowed universities
to factor in applicants' race into
the admissions process.
The Supreme Court ethics
controversy – Clarence Thomas
and Samuel Alito had accepted
luxury trips from billionaires,
including people involved in
cases before the court although
nearly all the justices had
engaged in similar behavior.
The Supreme Court, however, is
not subject to federal ethics
codes, including the judicial code of conduct for federal judges.
So by the letter, none of the justices acted unethically.
Republicans have argued the court, as part of the judicial branch,
must solve its ethics issues internally –- congressional attempts
to do so would undermine its independence.
The Webb Telescope detects well formed galaxies at the
beginning of time. It observed galaxies that formed less than a
billion years after the big bang (the universe is 13.8 billion years
old) which are more fully developed than previously thought. This
revises our understanding of how — and perhaps when — stars
and galaxies first evolved. Also, while magnetic fields exist
across the universe, not much is known about where they
originate.
In a year that had the hottest summer on record, a record amount
of the Canadian landscape burned as wildfires raged across
Canada. Smoke from the fires spread cross the entire continent
causing breathing related problems for many.
A tragic turn of events June 18 took the lives of five people when
a privately built submarine imploded while attempting a visit to the
wreck of the Titanic. The accident has prompted a re-thinking of
how deep submersibles are built and certified before they are
allowed to take tourists to the ocean floor. About four days after
the vessel went missing, officials found debris about 1,600 feet
from the Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean. They added the debris was
located in an empty area of the ocean floor and was not
immediately adjacent to the Titanic shipwreck. The Coast Guard
has since uncovered much of the debris and human remains.
The U.S. military shot down a high-altitude object the size of
three school buses officials believe China used to surveil the U.S.
Officialsbegan tracking the object shooting down the balloon
over the U.S. posed too much of a threat to those on the ground.
Despite the belief that the object had limited spying capability, the
incident caused tensions between the U.S. and China to
increase.
Regulators seized Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank,
resulting in two of the three largest bank failures in U.S. history.
The bank failures prompted additional uncertainty among regional
banks, prompting First Republic also to crumble later in the year.
Former President Donald Trump became the first former
president indicted for a crime, as a grand jury in Manhattan voted
to charge him with 34 counts of falsifying business records.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Trump falsified
business records to cover up "hush money" payments to help his
2016 election campaign. Among the allegations, Bragg claimed
Trump lawyer Michael Cohen paid $130,000 to adult film actress
Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence over an alleged affair
with Trump, which Trump denies. Bragg says Trump reimbursed
Cohen through a series of payments and wrote them off as legal
fees. March 30 would not be the last time Trump would be
charged with a crime. Then former President Trump is indicted
again. Trump was indicted in federal court on 37 counts related to
alleged mishandling of classified documents and blocking efforts
to investigate the missing documents. The indictment came after
officials raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, taking
dozens of boxes, some of which allegedly included top-secret
documents from his presidency.
Hollywood writers go on strike, disrupting the entertainment
industry. Citing how writers are paid for streaming programs and
concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in scripts, the
Writers Guild of America began a months long strike in May. The
Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio
Artists, citing similar concerns, also went on strike during the
summer. The result has been a major reduction in scripted TV
shows on network TV during the fall lineup. Movie studios have
also been forced to delay releasing a number of blockbuster
films. Both strikes came to an end in the fall.
The World Health Organization declared in May that the COVID-
19 pandemic is no longer a global health emergency after three
years and two months. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros
Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the virus killed over 20 million
people worldwide, but the rate of deaths had declined. The virus
is still considered a pandemic, and officials continue to
encourage the public to stay up to date on vaccinations as new
variants emerge. The COVID-19 crisis divided Americans over
masking, social distancing, business closures, and vaccine
mandates. On May 11, 2023, President Joe Biden declared it all
over.
The Federal Reserve increased federal interest rates to 5.25%-
5.5% — the highest levels in more than 22 years. Interest rates
increased 11 times during a two-year span to help combat
inflation, which reached over an annual rate of 9% in June 2022.
The Federal Reserve said its goal is to lower the inflation rate to
2%. Despite inflation cooling closer to 3% in recent months,
officials have not brought interest rates back down. The result has
made borrowing more expensive, especially for those looking to
buy a home. High interest rates typically cause discretionary
spending to cool and unemployment to increase. But as of this
fall, those events have not occurred.
Wind and dry conditions fueled a massive wildfire on Maui,
Hawaii, killing 99 people and nearly destroying the entire town of
Lahaina. Hundreds of buildings were affected by the fires and
hundreds of families were displaced. Some evidence and class-
action lawsuits have pointed to Hawaiian Electric power lines as
the cause of the catastrophe. Investigators say they are still
working to determine the exact cause.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore began seeking Chapter 11
bankruptcy as it faces several child sexual abuse lawsuits. In
April, a report on the Baltimore Archdiocese by Maryland Attorney
General Anthony G. Brown revealed 600 cases of child sex
abuse over the past 60 years by 156 current or former Catholic
clergy, seminarians, deacons, members of Catholic religious
orders, teachers at Catholic schools and other employees. The
Baltimore Archdiocese was among several major archdioceses to
file for bankruptcy as the Catholic Church continues to deal with
the fall out of the sexual abuse scandal.
Hamas launched a surprise terror attack on Israel, targeting
members of the Israeli military and civilians, resulting in the death
of 1,200 people in Israel. Additionally, Hamas took 248 people
hostage, including some Americans. Days later, Israel said it was
conducting a "complete siege" on the Gaza Strip, one of two
Palestinian-held areas within Israel. Since then, the two sides
have been engaged in a bloody war that has caused a massive
humanitarian crisis as many Gazans have been forced to flee
their homes. Israel had cut off fuel and other aid to Gaza amid
concerns that Hamas would use those supplies to fight against
Israel.
Former U.S. first lady Eleanor Rosalynn Carter died at the age of
96, two days after it was announced that she had entered home
hospice care. Carter died peacefully in Plains, Georgia,
surrounded by her family. Rosalynn Carter was known for being
an advocate for those suffering from mental health issues, and
she joined her husband for numerous Habitat for Humanity
projects over the years.

Local Zystrix News
There’s still a drought in new free VST stuff for recording although
there’s a lot of software to be had. One of the biggest hits of
2023 was the rompler synthesizer SFX1 by Slapassound. It’s
hard to believe it’s free. Another hit was the Overheat by
Sampleson. It has a distinctive tube type drive. I can’t think of a
pre-amp it emulates although it sort of sounds like a cross
between the H.H. Scott and the Voice-of-Music (remember
them?) tube pre. Dangerous Neighbors put several solo piano
tunes on a popular video website and an old hit called Marijuana.
Do a search on Marijuana Zystrix and the video comes up at the
top. The year was somewhat uneventful and that’s OK with me.
