Today we’ll see a debate whether keyboards should be allowed in a metal band. We’ll also look at a cool free studio EQ plugin for your DAW called the 7Q by Manda Audio. There’s also a few rockin’ guitar pedals you may enjoy like the DH4-2 by DemonFX, and the Pressure Tank and Red Devil both by Caline. Summer is squarely upon us here in the northern hemisphere. Cool Stuff Here’s a few more cool effects you may enjoy, and for whatever it’s worth, they have the “Zystrix Seal of Approval”. Give them a listen and see if you agree. The first one is a free plugin for your DAW and it’s excellent for taming frequencies on individual instruments, especially guitar. The last three physical guitar pedals are value buys and are readily available for purchase by clicking on the links. I have chosen all these effects because I like them, and I do not get any kind of payment or kickback if you decide to make a purchase. 7Q by Manda Audio This small graphic EQ plugin is an excellent, intuitive, high quality, and simple way to cleanup tracks and make different instruments and sound effects blend together more gracefully. I really like it on guitar although it is excellent on voice, synth, and bass. It comes in 32 and 64 bit versions for both Mac and Windows operating systems. It can be set to stereo or mono, it offers both high and low pass EQ filters, and has a low CPU demand. This plugin seems to be quite stable with normal use. And it’s free. Amazing. For some reason there’s a debate about which plugin is better. I can’t honestly say I understand the logic to the argument, nor the big sound difference to resort to an outdated plugin, but opinions run hot and wild sometimes. Unfortunately the Classic EQ is only 32 bit, only runs on Windows, and has been discontinued. However, it’s still available for the curious. DH4-2 by DemonFX I’ll bet you can guess which company is the inspiration for this guitar pedal. This aggressive high-gain monster can play clean, but really excels at heavy metal and tube-saturated rock. Yes, it’s possible to dial in a pleasant clean sound, but in my opinion, why bother? It’s forte is ROAR. The tones don’t tub out, but are clear and well defined, and it responds well to playing dynamics. It has a full-throated punch that is not your typical American or British metal tone. It also has a larger pedal board footprint which may be an issue for some players. The pedal requires a 12-18 volt power supply (not included) for maximum dynamic potential. If you like the sound of a Diezel amp or pedal then you will probably like this one. Killer. Red Devil by Caline This pedal exhibits fierce tube-like classic rock distortion to traditional metal tones, and it responds very well to playing dynamics. It features a toggle switch that goes from a smoother sounding vintage mode to a more defined modern mode. The EQ is three independent knobs for Treble, Middle, and Bass. The pedal sound is heavily influenced by the Triple Wreck by Wampler, but without the boost circuit. This pedal rocks, especially for only $34.80 USA and free shipping. Pressure Tank by Caline This guitar compressor has a very natural tone and it’s great for a wide range of compression duties. However, describing the sounds of different compressors is very difficult – they are all similar but different – but if you like the sound of the yellow Diamond Compressor then you most certainly would like this one, and you’ll save money.
