The Best
Affordable Overdrive
Pedals for Metal
In the last episode we went over the
third and final issue of the best
affordable all tube (valve) amps for metal part with
at least 50 watts (click here for a refresher).
This time we’re starting the new year with a
list of the best affordable overdrive pedals
for metal, and we’ll include a few honorable
mentions. So sit back and relax. Welcome
to Zystrix, the heartbeat of the
universe. Where creativity and
free-thinking have
more value than
conformity.

Introduction to
Affordable
Overdrive Pedals
for Metal
Not all amps sound like metal on
their own. And if you are lucky
enough to be able to afford one that does sound
metal, it’s nice to coax a little more oomph out it
sometimes. And amps that only produce great
clean tones need pedals (or an amp-in-a-
box pedal) just to sound believable. And
some amps (like a Boogie) don’t do well
with all overdrives because of the dirt type.
They tend to do better over-heating the front
end with less distortion and more signal strength
or with a distortion that’s similar to the amp’s
inherent sound itself. Makes sense I suppose.
And then another question becomes which pedals
to purchase, and in what order to connect them.
And in what order should they be presented
here for consideration. Ahh yes, the
frustration. There’s a lot of scenarios to
consider. In this overdrive presentation I’m
going to try to choose the overall most
popular pedals and go from there,
and it will be up to you, dear reader, to
choose the best one for your scenario.
There are a million paths to metal. And
above all and as usual, we’re looking for
affordable pedals, so lots of pedals are
going to be left out of this listing. Sorry.
With all of that being said, let’s move on
to the overdrive pedals...
Boss Blues Driver BD-2
This is an excellent overdrive that, to
my ear, has a Fender Deluxe amp type
of distortion, and it goes into near fuzz if
pushed hard. I haven’t heard a pedal
that sounds just like the original Boss
BD-2, but I’ve heard some
that are close. Where the clone pedal
sound falls down is in the extreme gain
settings. But do most guitarists run
their Blues Driver pedal like that? No,
it’s too fuzzy. It’s easy to find this Boss
pedal new or used, and I got a deal on
mine in a local pawn shop. But for some
inexpensive alternatives that do an
excellent job listen to the Donner Blues
Drive or the Mooer Blues Mood.
Ibanez Tube Screamer
What can be said about the Tube
Screamer? It precedes itself. It’s
got a distinctive EQ mid-hump that
strat players seem to appreciate, and
the drive sound is a compliment to an
already over-driven amp. It tends to
add definition to overdrive. And there
are many versions, so finding the right one for you
is a matter of critical listening. One clone version
that’s nice is the JHS Bonsai because it’s got a
bunch of TS options in a single pedal, so a Tube
Screamer aficionado can hit all the bases. But the
JHS version is expensive -- too expensive to be
considered here. And I would guess it has many
choices that will never be used more than a
couple of times. On the other hand, if you know
what TS version you like then the
decision becomes simple. The Tube
Screamer 808 is probably the most
sought after. For something a little
more affordable check out the Mosky
Mini Screamer, the Behringer
Vintage Overdrive, the Caline
Midlander, or the Joyo Vintage
Overdrive. If you pay over $35 USA
with free shipping you paid too much. Also give
the DemonFX King of Drive (see explanation
below) a listen with two effects built into one (TS
circuit and Klon circuit) for $64-70 USA and free
shipping on Ebay and Amazon.
Boss Super
Overdrive SD-1
This pedal has a very natural and
pleasing although somewhat
nondescript loud amp personality, it
goes great with a metal sounding
amp, or into a pedal like the
Fulltone OCD, or an amp-in-a-box
pedal, and it’s another pedal that is
difficult to find a close match in sound. It isn’t that
expensive and it’s very easy to find one new or
used, so I’d just spring for the real thing.
I’ve found them used for $60 USA at my
local pawn shop, and slightly more new,
about $62-70 USA with free shipping on
Ebay and Amazon. On the other hand, if
you must find something that sounds
close just to save a little money check
out the Kokko FOD5 Supa Drive found
on Ebay and Amazon for $25-30 USA
and free shipping.
Analog Man
King of Tone
Here it is, the holiest and most
revered pedal of all, well, at
least one of them. Dial in your
favorite drive tone. It’s almost like a dream. I
wish I were on acid. Last I knew the wait time on
one of these pedals is about 5
years. So for those of us who
don’t feel like waiting there’s the
TC Electronic King of Blues.
The DemonFX King of Drive is
also a great clone of the pedal.
But the DemonFX 83, a similar
pedal, traded out the Tube
Screamer circuit for the Blues
Breaker circuit instead for those
of us who are not wild about the
TS sound. My favorite.
Paul Cochrane Timmy
If you prefer more of a transparent
overdrive sound the Timmy is excellent.
And if the gain is turned up it doesn’t
lose that smooth pleasant
tube style warmth. The
Vemuram Jan Ray is another
pedal that basically says the
same thing but with a higher
price tag. And after critical
listening and experience I have
to say the Pure Sky by Caline
beats both of them because it gets that
same basic sound but it offers a tiny bit
more volume and gain, and the price is
right at $25-35 USA and free shipping from Ebay,
Walmart, Reverb, and Amazon. I’m here to say.
Klon Centaur
Here it is, yet another one of
the holiest and most revered
guitar pedals of all. If you
enjoy transparent overdrive
this is another one that’s
hard to beat. And the price is prohibitive for most
of us mere mortals. But there are some more
affordable versions that sound
extremely close for the money. Check
out the Wampler Tumnus pedal, or the
Mosky Golden Horse for only $28-35
USA and free shipping from Walmart
or Amazon. Or listen to the DemonFX
83 or the DemonFX King of Tone (see
above) for two effects in one pedal.
Horizon Precision
Drive
This pedal is very popular with
guitarists looking for that overdriven
staccato rhythm sound. It
adds definition and gets rid of
the excess noise during the
rests. Another one that does
the job quite well without the extra
expense is the DemonFX Precision
Drive, and it can be found at Walmart,
Amazon, and Ebay for $52-60 USA with
free shipping.
Fulltone OCD
This extremely popular overdrive pedal
has been sought out for
years for it’s powerful
natural overdrive. Warm
Audio now makes what’s
called the ODD pedal
because Fulltone went out
of business. The kind folks at
Warm Audio say the circuitry
and the sound is the same as
the original OCD. On the other hand, if you
enjoy the sound of the original OCD listen
to the Caline Leon Drive or the Mosky
Obsessive.
Fulltone
Fulldrive
2
This forgotten pedal
was voted pedal of the year when it first came out
and even a few years in a row after that. It is
somewhat common in country guitar circles but
not too many rockers use it. This pedal fell out of
favor but it still sounds great, and it really fattens
up an otherwise wimpy sounding guitar. The
distortion can be distinctively Mosfet sounding if
pushed, but that may be something you enjoy. It’s
versatile from clean boost to transparent
overdrive, and if used
judiciously it imparts a
vintage late 1970s early
1980s rock grind that’s
thick and beefy. However,
if the gain is turned too
high it tends to be right on
the edge of fuzz territory. To be fair, though, many
overdrive pedals exhibit this attribute. And it does
do a fantastic job of adding oomph to an amp’s
front-end. Sometimes it reminds me a little of the
Dumble sound. Wampler
has a spin on the Fulltone
Fulldrive 2 called the
Mofetta. And Electro
Harmonix has their take
called the Glove. But if you
are looking for a price
alternative check out the Joyo Maximum
Overdrive. It sounds close enough to the
Fulltone version that I can’t tell the difference, and
I found them for $50-55 USA and free shipping on
Ebay. The Caline Crazy Cacti is also an
excellent choice.
Nobels ODR-1
Natural Overdrive
When the gain is turned up this
pedal it reminds me of an old
chrome-face Fender Dual Showman
with the volume pushed into ear-
splitting overdrive territory. This
pedal has been very popular with
country players, but it also rocks like hell if
stacked properly or for goosing an amp that
already sounds metal. The distortion is
smooth, singing, and natural sounding.
Wampler also makes a great version of the
ODR-1 called the Belle, and it offers a
bass control that’s great for
guitarists who prefer humbuckers.
Way Huge STO is another pedal
that sounds very similar, but to my ear it
has a little more of a Marshall-like grind.
It would be especially great used
alone for straight rock and country
rock (think Saturday Night Special by Lynyrd
Skynyrd). Probably the best inexpensive
alternative to the Nobels ODR-1 is the Tone
City Nobelman. Does it sound as good or
is it as versatile as the Wampler Belle? No.
But if you‘d like a believable sounding simple
original version at a good price then the Tone City
Nobelman is hard to beat.
Marshall Blues
Breaker
This light to medium gain pedal
doesn’t push the front
end of an amp much --
it’s wimpy. It was
designed to recreate
tube breakup plugged
into a clean amp. Some pedals like the
Wampler Pantheon have taken the
circuit and improved it with better
EQ, gain, and output. But if you
want bang-for-the-buck listen to the Tone
City King of Blues because it has the Blues
Breaker circuit plus the Klon circuit just like
the DemonFX 83. Do you want just the
Blues Breaker sound by itself? Check out the
Rowin Bluesy on Amazon or Ebay for $30-35
USA and free shipping.
Marshall Shred Master
The original pedal is another one that
costs much more money than is
allowed here, but the re-issue is
available now for about $200 USA
with free shipping on
Reverb and Amazon. This is the
pedal circuit that inspired the
enviable Truetone Jekyll and
Hyde pedal. They took that
Marshall Shredmaster circuit to a
psycho extreme for a rip-your-face-
off type of overdrive that doesn’t
quit. And that circuit inspired the Truetone Son of
Hyde pedal which in turn inspired the Joyo High
Gain Distortion pedal. Check out the sound of
the Joyo High Gain Distortion pedal if you enjoy
hard edged over-the-top flame-throwing
super gain. Played through a 4x12 IR it
sounds like an angry amp-in-a-box. I found the
Joyo for $33-35 USA and free shipping on Ebay,
Amazon, and Walmart. Killer.
Mi Audio Crunch Box
This easy-to-use versatile dynamic
pedal adds a nice Mashall-like
distortion and excels as an addition to
super high-gain sounds. The
company has improved the old
pedal calling it the Super
Crunch Box, but the old version
still rocks. The Caline Sand
Storm and the Joyo Crunch
Distortion also do the job as well
for $29-37 USA and free shipping from
Ebay or Reverb.
Suhr Riot
This crunchy to extreme high-gain
pedal is based on a 100-watt tube
amp harmonics, and it’s a return to
the wall-shaking amp tones of the
1980s (think Motley Crue or Guns
and Roses). I found a
great sounding price
alternative called the
Donner Morpher and also the
Mosky Crazy Tone for $27-35
USA with free shipping from
Walmart and Ebay.
Mad Professor Sweet
Honey Overdrive
This super simple pedal is very
dynamic and can be dialed in for all
sorts of guitar pickups using the focus
control. The sound has a round,
pleasant, and believable
tube-type response and it
gooses an already distorted amp very
well. If you like the Sweet Honey listen
to the Joyo Sweet Baby or the Caline
Queen Bee for $33-39 USA and free
shipping from Music Express Canada,
Ebay, and Amazon.
Xotic Effects
BB Preamp
This touch responsive pedal goes
from a clean boost to a
creamy overdrive and
really does a great job of
pushing the front end of an
amp. Another great
sounding price alternative is
the Caline Orange Burst for $35-39
USA and free shipping from Music
Express Canada or Amazon.
Hermida Audio Zendrive
This pedal can cost more than my first
used Buick, but they sound so
excellent. They’re smooth, round,
almost syrupy, with a balanced light to
medium overdrive. The
overdrive is reminiscent of the
sound of a Dumble amp. This
is a great pedal to goose
another pedal or an already metal
sounding amp. And if you are
looking to spend something more
reasonable listen to the Joyo Taichi for $45-
53 USA with free shipping on Ebay and
Amazon. And the Rowin Dumbler is
almost as good for $27-36 USA and free
shipping from Amazon and Walmart.
Honorable Mention Overdrive Pedals
Some of these pedals don’t fit into a
neat or sometimes affordable category.
But because of their outstanding new
or retro contributions to the world of overdrive they
are presented here. There are many more
overdrives that could be included here.
Fender MTG Tube Distortion
This pedal has a 6205 tube inside.
Designed with the help of Bruce
Egnator of Egnator Amplifiers. This
overdrive has a natural tube sound
(surprise) and there are hundreds of
great sounds available from this pedal.
It’s expensive ($140-200 USA Ebay and Reverb)
but it sounds great.
Source Audio LA Lady
Technically this pedal shouldn’t be included
here because it’s digital and (you guessed
it) it’s expensive (about $200 USA ) by the
standards set here, but it sounds so good
and does so much that it’s hard to ignore. This
pedal accepts all kinds of downloadable digital
algorithms for all kinds of overdrive pedal voices.
Using a computer to make pedal changes isn’t a
task for everyone, but the LA Lady is an excellent
tonal chameleon.
DOD Overdrive 250
This pedal sounds suspiciously like the MXR
Distortion Plus, but it makes a great albeit
retro type overdrive.
Boss Overdrive OD-3 and OD-1
Easy to find but can be quite expensive.
TC Electronic MojoMojo Overdrive
Amp-like overdrive that’s very responsive.
TC Electronic Cinders Overdrive
Based on the Boss Blues Driver circuit.
Conclusion
Affordable Overdrive
Pedals for Metal
There were many overdrive
choices listed here, but the
one that matters is the one
you prefer. Sometimes it just
takes that one magical
moment when pedals are stacked and the sound
exceeds the sum of the parts. I hope this
affordable overdrive issue has given you food for
thought, saved you time and
money, and helped in your
future overdrive
experimentations.
Don’t touch that dial…
Stay tuned next time…
I’m going to give you some ideas on how
to create some heavy metal
riffs. And there’s a new
Dangerous Neighbors solo
piano tune called Pin Drop.
Maybe I’ll see you then.

format options: the first option is a single file MP3 containing all
the tunes in one chunk similar to tape recordings. The
second download option is a folder with all of the separate
